MoonPay PayBox Brings AI Crypto Payments to Grok

Typing a sentence to a chatbot and watching it actually buy cryptocurrency for you used to sound like science fiction. Yet, today we have MoonPay’s PayBox live inside Grok, and that idea turns into a real, working feature for anyone eager to try it.

MoonPay PayBox Brings AI Crypto Payments to Grok

Crypto payments company MoonPay announced on Monday, August 31, 2026, that it has connected its AI-focused payment tool PayBox to Grok, the chatbot built by Elon Musk’s company xAI and available on the social platform X.

The move lets Grok users ask for crypto transactions in plain spoken language and have the request carried out by AI agent after their approval. MoonPay first introduced this tool for ChatGPT and Claude in July. Crypto Briefing reports that the service is now available to Grok users worldwide.

MoonPay is a fintech best known for letting people convert fiat into cryptocurrency and back again. PayBox is its newer product: a digital vault that connects a person’s crypto wallet, bank cards, and other payment details to an AI assistant, so it, in turn, can prepare transactions without ever taking actual control of the person’s money.

Once connected, a Grok user can type something like “swap $100 of PYUSD to SOL” or “book a dinner reservation tonight,” and Grok will research the request and prepare the transaction. Nothing is finalized until the user approves it with a passkey, a secure digital login method tied to their device. PayBox offers two settings: “Always Ask,” which requires approval for every single transaction, and “Autonomous,” which lets the AI act more freely on its own but only within spending limits the user sets in advance. Agentic payments access can be switched off and on at any time.

MoonPay says no single party, not itself, not the AI, and not any outside platform, can move a user’s funds without that approval step. Card payments run through Visa’s system for AI-driven commerce, which is designed to process purchases without exposing the card number. The underlying technology partly comes from Sodot, a security firm MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026. MoonPay states the infrastructure already protects more than $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets.
