Finnish forest machinery manufacturer Ponsse has unveiled the next generation of its Opti 5G information system for tracked forestry machines, aiming to improve productivity, data management, and operator efficiency in demanding logging environments.

The new system integrates several harvesting functions into a single digital interface designed to simplify operations for forestry professionals working in challenging terrain. According to the company, the upgrade reflects the growing role of connected technologies and real-time data in modern forestry operations.
“Opti 5G brings all key harvesting functions together into one clear interface, reducing the need for separate systems and improving daily work efficiency. The system includes, among others, cutting control, automatic cutting, calibration, data management, and reporting – all in one view,” says Markku Savolainen, Product Manager, Harvester Heads, Ponsse Plc.
The system is designed to enhance logging optimization, machine control, and operator confidence through improved usability and data visibility. Its customizable My View display allows operators to adjust settings quickly without interrupting work, while an active map view improves safety and situational awareness in the field.
Opti 5G also generates real-time data on machine performance, working time, production levels, and fuel consumption, helping forestry companies monitor efficiency and sustainability more closely. Using standardized StanForD 2010 data, the system can integrate with international harvesting systems and support additional applications.
The rollout of connected machine systems like Opti 5G comes as global 5G infrastructure expands rapidly. According to data highlighted by Statista, 5G networks covered about 55% of the world’s population by the end of 2025, although access remains uneven between high-income and developing regions.
This expanding connectivity is enabling industries such as forestry, mining, agriculture, and construction to adopt data-driven equipment management, remote monitoring, and digital automation.
Ponsse’s new system also introduces improved usability features, including faster response times, simplified menu structures, and three main operating views — work, planning, and machine. The experience is enhanced by the Opti 8X display, which provides high touch precision and strong visibility even in harsh operating conditions.
Designed for global use, the system supports multiple languages and measurement units and allows operators to mark tree-specific observations, such as insect damage or decay, directly in the data records.
The Opti 5G information system is now available as standard equipment for all Ponsse harvester heads installed on tracked machines, forming a digital foundation for future forestry technology innovations.
