Splitwise Pay by Bank service will now function across France, Germany, and Austria via Tink, a Visa Solution, partnership.
Splitwise, the bill-splitting and expense-sharing app, has expanded its partnership with Tink, a Visa Solution, to introduce Pay by Bank functionality across France, Germany, and Austria.
Pay by Bank is a digital, account-to-account payment service that lets users pay directly from their bank account without using a card. Ерші payment method provides a fast and secure way to pay online, allowing authentication and payment without the need for card details or multiple redirects. It leverages open banking technology to securely connect the payer’s bank account to a merchant or service (like Splitwise) for instant payments.
Following strong adoption in the UK, where the number of Tink-powered account checks and payment initiations has grown by 150% this year, the expansion enables Splitwise users in the three new markets to send money instantly and securely within the app using open banking technology.
Previously, Splitwise users had to leave the app and manually transfer funds via their banking platform to settle balances. With Tink’s integration, users can now connect their bank accounts and complete payments in just a few clicks, streamlining the process and improving the user experience.
The move aligns with the broader growth of open banking globally. According to Juniper Research, the number of open banking users is projected to rise from 183 million in 2025 to over 645 million by 2029.
Account-to-account (A2A) payments are also rapidly growing, expected to counterbalance 15-25% of future card transaction volume growth. In Europe, with numerous domestic instant payment systems as well as pan-regional A2A initiatives, A2A payment volume growth is even more pronounced, with a forecast surge up to 30% this year.
Splitwise CEO and co-founder Jonathan Bittner said the company aims to make the payment experience “as secure and direct as possible,” and that Tink’s open banking technology helps deliver on that goal. Ian Morrin, Head of Payments at Tink, noted the partnership’s success in the UK and expressed enthusiasm for expanding to additional European markets.
