Stripe Launches X402 Payments On Base, Letting AI Agents Transact Autonomously With USDC

Payments giant Stripe has introduced a preview of its x402 payments feature on the Base blockchain, enabling autonomous software agents to transact directly using Circle’s USD Coin (USDC) rather than relying on traditional human‑initiated billing flows.

The new capability embeds agent‑to‑service settlements into Stripe’s existing PaymentIntents API, allowing developers to generate a unique deposit address for each machine‑initiated transaction and track status via APIs, webhooks or the Stripe Dashboard. The company also released developer tools, including an open‑source CLI and code samples, to facilitate integration and testing for early adopters.

Each action, starting from API calls to digital service procurement, can now trigger real-time payments embedded directly into Stripe’s infrastructure, turning automated workflows into self-contained financial loops. Developers can generate unique deposit addresses for each agent, track status via API or dashboard, and integrate easily using Stripe’s open-source CLI and code samples, opening a new era of frictionless agent-driven commerce.

In the emerging “agent economy,” autonomous AI programs handle procurement of APIs, data access, compute power and other digital services without human intervention. By reviving the open x402 protocol, built around the legacy HTTP 402 “Payment Required” signal, Stripe now brings low‑cost, near‑instant micropayments onchain via USDC on Base, supporting real‑time, per‑action pricing instead of traditional subscription or invoice models.

Besides, Stripe’s choice of USD Coin (USDC) reflects its focus on reliability, speed, and regulatory compliance in machine-to-machine transactions. USDC is a fully backed, fiat-collateralized stablecoin, pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, which minimizes volatility and makes it predictable for automated payments. Its popularity has grown steadily, with circulation surpassing $50 billion and adoption spanning thousands of exchanges, wallets, and enterprise payment systems worldwide.

USDC facilitates a variety of use cases, including cross-border payments, instant micropayments, programmable finance, and API-driven commerce, making it ideal for Stripe’s x402 implementation where AI agents require seamless, low-friction settlements in real time.
