WalletConnect Pay, a payment infrastructure for crypto and stablecoin transactions, is now available to merchants in South Africa through Ezeebit

WalletConnect has launched its WalletConnect Pay payment infrastructure in South Africa through an integration with Ezeebit, a crypto payment provider serving African businesses. Merchants can now accept stablecoins and cryptocurrency both in-store and online, with instant settlement available in stablecoins or fiat.
The first partner is The Capital, a hotel and apartment company operating across several cities in South Africa. Guests can pay from more than 700 wallets, and the company receives funds immediately. To mark the launch, customers receive 2% cashback in the WCT token on every purchase. According to Ezeebit, the service is already live across all 13 of The Capital’s locations, and the companies plan to expand it to other businesses across Africa.
“African businesses have been asking for a payments solution that works the way their customers actually shop — and that increasingly means crypto. WalletConnect Pay gives our merchants access to hundreds of millions of crypto users without adding complexity to their operations. Launching at The Capital and across their 13 locations is just the beginning; we’re bringing this to businesses across Africa,” said Daniel Katz, CEO of Ezeebit.
Customers can pay with many assets on different networks: USDC, USDT and ETH on Ethereum; USDT and BNB on BNB Smart Chain; and USDC and USDT on Solana. Merchants can choose the settlement currency themselves: stablecoins or fiat.
The launch comes amid notable growth in onchain activity in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Chainalysis, the region received more than $205 billion between July 2024 and June 2025. This is 52% more than the previous year, ranking the region third in growth behind Asia Pacific and Latin America.
“South Africa has one of the most dynamic digital payments ecosystems on the continent, and WalletConnect Pay through Ezeebit is precisely the kind of infrastructure needed to bring crypto into everyday commerce. We’re glad to have removed every major barrier that stands between merchants, customers, and their first crypto transaction,” said Jess Houlgrave, CEO at WalletConnect.
The integration runs on Ezeebit’s existing infrastructure. Merchants need to only connect to the system once, and thereafter, they will have constant access to all the WalletConnect-compatible wallets. The company mentions that over 900 million users in different parts of the world are already registered, and over $400 billion worth of transactions were processed in 2025.
According to the developers, the service solves certain common problems faced by crypto payment users. For example, customers do not need to input the amount by themselves anymore, as it is already stated in the transaction and only has to be confirmed by the user before processing. The fees of the service provider remain unknown to the end user, as the customer pays only the amount they see on the screen.
The process of payment itself becomes standardized, which means that each customer will be taking the same steps, regardless of the kind of wallet they are using. Whether it is MetaMask, Trust Wallet, or some other similar wallet compatible with the service.
Currently, the solution is launched in South Africa and already works in Kenya and Nigeria.
