In 2021, the base of mobile citizen credentials globally reached 319.1 million, ABI Research has found. This rose to 419 million in 2022, which was a 31% YoY growth. And as the pandemic pushes lawmakers towards the smartphone in a bid to create touchless services via contactless technologies, the uptake of mobile identities (mID) can be seen across applications apart from passport.

As the mobile market grows amid the coronavirus pandemic, new tenders are continually being unveiled. Between 2022 and 2023, South Africa, South Korea and the UK may trial or introduce trial mobile driver’s licenses.

The application of the mobile form factor is still dominating with an occupation of 82% of mobile identities that are in circulation in 2020. Some programs include those in Spain, Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Moldova, Austria and Turkey. The Argentinian mobile ID has also grown, with the growth of mID credentials that are in circulation estimated to reach 653.5 million by 2026.

In 2021, mobile driver’s licenses will reach 49.6 million credentials, which will see the success of various projects. The Brazilian digital driver’s license is set to begin in 2022. Also, the circulation of Mobile National IDs will reach 255.4 million.

This will be the most popular mobile citizen credential, with the likelihood of leading the sector. This comes as mobile healthcare credentials gain more traction. Many regions, such as Estonia, are set to integrate the mID with mobile healthcare. Mobile healthcare credentials have increased to 13.1 million in 2021 compared to 6.5 million in 2020.
