In the second quarter of this year, the global smartphone market recorded an increase in sales figures.
IDC data shows that global shipments of the mentioned devices showed growth in April- June 2024. The corresponding figure increased by 6.5% compared to the result of the same period last year. In quantitative terms, these shipments amounted to 285.4 million units.
Information released by Counterpoint Research, which addresses end-user sales, shows that smartphone shipments grew by 6% globally in April-June 2024.
Aggressive discounts at China’s 618 Shopping Festival have helped gain consumers in the corresponding Asian country’s cell phone market. Currently, China has seen an increasing market position for local smartphone manufacturers. This tendency is particularly true for Xiaomi Corp., and Huawei Technologies Co., which is on a strong rebound trajectory. China has also seen a recovery in Apple’s iPhone sales since March.
Global smartphone sales growth in the second quarter of the current year was particularly driven by the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into relevant devices. For example, Vivo has implemented relevant technologies in the X100. There are also large-scale plans to use artificial intelligence in Apple smartphones. Besides, Samsung announced the introduction of AI into its devices.
IDC data shows that Apple smartphone shipments for April- June 2024 amounted to 45.2 million units. This indicator showed an increase of 1.5% compared to the result of the same period last year.
At the same time, Counterpoint data, looking only at end-user sales, shows that iPhone shipments at the global level for April-June 2024 fell 1% compared to the second quarter of 2023. At the same time, research groups agree that Apple’s smartphone position is weakening in the global market.
The iPhone has faced several sorts of hurdles in China. Competition from local smartphone manufacturers has intensified in the Asian country. Also, an obstacle to the dynamic of iPhone sales in China was the government ban on the use of foreign devices at state-run workplaces.
The leader in smartphone shipments globally is Samsung. IDC released the relevant information. The mentioned technology giant’s smartphone shipments from April to June 2024 totaled 53.9 million units. This figure increased by 0.7% year on year.
Apple takes second place in the specified ranking. Xiaomi is in third place. Smartphone shipments made by the mentioned manufacturer at the global level in April-June of the current year amounted to 42.3 million units. This figure increased by 27.4% compared to the same period in 2023.
