Block Enables 4 Million+ Merchants to Accept Bitcoin Payments

For the first time, millions of Block merchants worldwide can turn Bitcoin from a niche digital asset for chosen traders into a mainstream payment option, signaling a potential shift in how consumers and businesses transact.

Block Enables 4 Million+ Merchants to Accept Bitcoin Payments

Block Inc., the parent company of Square, has announced that over 4 million merchants worldwide can now accept Bitcoin as a payment method through its platform. The move marks a significant milestone in the adoption of cryptocurrencies for everyday commerce.

The integration leverages the Lightning Network, allowing near-instant settlement and low transaction fees. Merchants will benefit from 0 % transaction fees until 2026/2027, after which a nominal fee of approximately 1 % will apply, still being substantially lower than the 2.5–3.5 % typically charged for credit card transactions.

While Square is leading this expansion, other payment providers, including PayPal, have also rolled out or are testing crypto payment acceptance, reflecting a broader trend of mainstream platforms exploring digital assets.

According to a 2022 Crypto.com survey, over 50 % of merchants expressed willingness to accept cryptocurrencies, while about the same share of consumers indicated readiness to use them, highlighting growing but measured adoption.

As for B2B payments, around 65% of businesses use cryptocurrencies for vendor payments, while 75% of the business representatives surveyed by GoodFirms find cryptocurrency transactions for B2B payments beneficial and speedy.

Industry experts note that enabling millions of merchants to accept Bitcoin represents a step toward normalizing crypto in daily commerce, though questions remain around volatility, regulatory compliance, and customer adoption in different markets.

This announcement underscores an evolving landscape where digital assets are increasingly integrated into payment ecosystems, prompting businesses to consider how and when to adopt crypto solutions as part of a diversified payment strategy.

Block Inc. is a global technology company providing financial solutions, commerce infrastructure, and digital payments. Its Square platform serves millions of merchants with tools to accept payments, manage businesses, and explore innovative financial technologies.
