OCBC is set to become the first Singapore bank to let customers scan and pay virtually any major merchant QR code in mainland China, marking a breakthrough in seamless cross-border payments.

OCBC has moved decisively to strengthen its regional payments leadership by expanding its long-standing collaboration with UnionPay International, and unveiling a new capability that will allow customers to use the OCBC Digital app to scan and pay every major merchant QR code in mainland China.
The enhancement, formalised in Shanghai on November 28, builds on years of cooperation with UnionPay and earlier integrations with Alipay+ and regional e-wallets, effectively consolidating China’s QR ecosystem into a single, bank-issued interface for Singapore travellers.
From the first quarter of 2026, OCBC customers will be able to pay directly at merchants that accept Weixin Pay, Alipay+, or UnionPay QR codes simply by scanning the displayed code with the OCBC app. Payments are debited straight from the customer’s OCBC Singapore bank account, eliminating the need for foreign wallets, top-ups, or juggling multiple apps. This unified experience is particularly significant in China, where cashless payments dominate everyday life, and QR codes are the default mode for retail purchases, dining, transport, and lifestyle services.
The upgrade follows earlier milestones: in 2023, OCBC enabled UnionPay QR payments across 47 markets and became the first Singapore bank to integrate Alipay+, widening access to cross-border suppliers and merchants globally. With usage of its “Scan & Pay” function already climbing, OCBC’s broader strategy is clear — to meet rising travel and commerce flows with solutions that work intuitively across borders.
While some practical details, such as transaction limits or merchant exceptions, will be refined closer to launch, the strategic importance is unmistakable. By giving customers the ability to “pay like a local” in the world’s largest QR-payments market, OCBC positions itself at the forefront of Asia’s next wave of digital payments integration.
