Six months after going live at ING Germany, the Wero digital wallet is showing significant momentum in its rollout across Europe, marking a key phase in the expansion of a unified European payment ecosystem.

Six Months After Launch at ING Germany, Wero Hits Major Adoption Milestones and Strengthens European Payment Collaboration

According to ING leadership, more than 500,000 Wero wallets have been activated by customers of ING Deutschland since launch, a milestone that underscores early adoption and user interest in the service. At the same time, the broader payment network behind Wero has continued to grow rapidly: the European Payments Initiative (EPI) reported having surpassed 50 million users across its markets, reflecting strong cross‑border uptake and signaling that a pan‑European alternative to traditional payment methods is taking shape.

Expansion, Co‑Branding, and Market Growth

Wero’s expansion isn’t limited to Germany. Luxembourg is set to join the rollout in 2026, with several major banks in the country integrating the instant‑payment app as part of their digital offering.

In parallel, a co‑branding initiative between iDEAL – the widely used Dutch payment method, and Wero has begun. This step will support a phased migration where iDEAL and Wero are presented together in checkout flows, familiarising users with the new European wallet while leveraging the strong local reputation of iDEAL.

European Payments Initiative and EuroPA Memorandum of Understanding

A key development in the broader payments landscape is the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and EuroPA — an alliance of national payment schemes from countries including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Greece, and the Nordic region.

This cooperation aims to enhance interoperability across European payment systems, making it easier to send and receive funds across borders and merchant channels. By aligning technical standards and promoting shared infrastructure, the partnership seeks to support a more integrated and user‑friendly European payments environment — a strategic move toward reducing fragmentation and increasing competition with global providers.

Outlook for Wero and European Payments

Wero growth reflects a broader industry push toward a unified digital wallet that works seamlessly across Europe. With expanding availability in e‑commerce, merchant acceptance rolling out in key markets, and institutional cooperation strengthening interoperability, the platform is positioning itself as a competitive alternative to established international payment players. It is also an important factor in potentially reaching European payment sovereignty much-desired in times of global geopolitical turbulence.
