Flutterwave Adds Stablecoin Wallets as African Merchants Accelerate Digital Dollar Adoption

Flutterwave has announced the rollout of stablecoin wallets for merchants across Africa, marking a service expansion aimed at supporting faster, lower-cost, and more flexible digital payments. The new feature allows businesses on the platform to hold, receive, and transact in stablecoins alongside traditional fiat currencies directly within their Flutterwave accounts.

The stablecoin wallets are integrated into Flutterwave’s existing merchant dashboard, removing the need for external crypto wallets or separate blockchain integrations. Merchants can manage balances, receive payments, and move funds using stablecoins such as USDC and USDT, while continuing to access Flutterwave’s core payment and settlement tools. The company indicated that the rollout is starting with a controlled group of merchants, with broader availability planned as the service scales.

The launch comes as stablecoin usage in Africa continues to rise. Industry and institutional reports show that stablecoins account for a significant share of crypto transaction activity in Sub-Saharan Africa, with estimates suggesting they represent over 40% of total on-chain transaction volume in the region. In relative terms, stablecoin flows across Africa are among the highest globally when measured against regional GDP (about 6.7%), highlighting their practical use in everyday financial activity rather than speculative trading alone.

Nigeria remains a key driver of this trend, recording tens of billions of dollars in stablecoin transaction volumes over recent reporting periods. Other markets, including South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana, have also seen growing inflows, reflecting demand for faster cross-border settlement, protection against currency volatility, and access to dollar-denominated liquidity.

Flutterwave’s merchant base provides a large distribution channel for this capability. The company reports supporting more than one million businesses globally, spanning small merchants, online sellers, and enterprise clients, with a significant concentration across African markets. By embedding stablecoin functionality into a platform already used for local and international payments, Flutterwave is positioning stablecoins as a complementary payment rail rather than a standalone crypto product.

The company has framed the update as part of its broader strategy to modernise payment infrastructure for African businesses, particularly those engaged in cross-border trade. Stablecoins offer near-real-time settlement and can reduce reliance on traditional correspondent banking networks, which are often slow and costly for intra-African and international transfers.

The service expansion reflects a wider shift across emerging markets, where payment providers are increasingly blending fiat and blockchain-based systems. For Flutterwave, the addition of stablecoin wallets strengthens its role as a multi-rail payments platform, aligned with how merchants across Africa are already using digital dollars for trade, treasury management, and international commerce.
