Unlike lab simulations or sandbox experiments, AI agent transaction facilitated by Mastercard and Banco Santander was processed through real banking infrastructure, turning theoretical “agentic commerce” discussions to operational reality.

Europe’s payments landscape has taken a decisive step toward autonomous commerce, as Mastercard and Banco Santander have completed what they describe as Europe’s first live, end-to-end payment executed by an artificial intelligence (AI) agent within a regulated banking environment.
The transaction was routed through Banco Santander’s real payment systems, the ones bank uses every day for customer payments, under controlled conditions designed to meet compliance, security, and consumer protection standards. Santander’s Payments Hub, the cloud-based platform used across the bank’s global operations, currently processes over 14 million payments every day. This includes domestic and international payments moving between accounts in real time. The bank has plans to scale this figure up to around 40 million daily payments as more markets (such as Brazil and Mexico) are fully integrated into the system. Across Santander’s wider payments ecosystem (including merchant and card transactions), its payment processing units like Getnet and the broader PagoNxt platform handle billions of transactions per year.
The milestone payment was executed using Mastercard’s AI-enabled framework known as Mastercard Agent Pay, which allows AI agents to be recognized as verified, permissioned participants within the payments flow.
The success of the transaction de facto proves that an AI agent can participate directly in regulated payment rails without manual step-by-step human input, given that defined authorisation boundaries are properly set and controlled.
At the same time, executives from both companies emphasised that this was not a public rollout of a new service ready for use, but rather a validated proof-of-concept demonstrating technical and regulatory feasibility.
The development comes at a pivotal moment for financial institutions. Banks and networks across Europe are exploring how generative AI and autonomous systems can streamline operations, personalise financial services, and improve customer experience, while staying compliant with increasingly strict regulatory frameworks.
“At Santander, we see AI as a transformative force in the evolution of payments. Our role is not only to adopt innovation, but to shape it responsibly, embedding security, governance and customer protection by design. As AI agents become part of everyday commerce, building trusted, scalable frameworks will be essential to unlocking their full potential.”
Matías Sánchez, global head of Cards and Digital Solutions at Santander
To balance utility and innovation with control and compliance, the pilot incorporated clear customer authorisation parameters, identity verification mechanisms, transaction limits, auditability features, and compliance checks in acordance with existing payment regulations.
“Agentic payments represent a profound shift in how commerce is initiated and executed. With Mastercard Agent Pay, we are applying the same principles that have defined our network for decades — security, trust, interoperability and global scale — to a new era of AI-enabled commerce. This milestone with Banco Santander demonstrates that innovation and trust can advance together.”

Once such payments and broader orchestrated agentic ecosystems move from the test phase to practical implementation, their potential applications could include:
-
Automated subscription management;
-
Smart procurement for businesses;
-
AI assistants comparing offers and executing purchases;
-
Real-time optimisation of loyalty rewards and payment methods, and more.
