PhonePe, one of India’s leading digital payments platforms, has introduced new AI‑powered voice and text features that allow users to interact with the app in a more natural, conversational way to make payments and complete other tasks.

The new AI payment feature uses generative AI technology from Microsoft’s Foundry and Azure platforms to understand everyday spoken or typed language. That makes app navigation much simpler. Instead of tapping through menus, users can now say or type commands like “Pay ₹50 to Aisha” or “Check my last transactions” to perform needed actions directly from the main app page.
The update makes the PhonePe app more intuitive and accessible, especially for users who find traditional menu navigation complex or time‑consuming. Besides, it reflects a broader trend in fintech towards AI‑driven user experiences that reduce friction in digital payments.
The new feature is being rolled out in phases across PhonePe’s huge user base in India. PhonePe has surpassed 600 million registered users across India in early 2025, showing consistent yearly growth compared to earlier milestones of 500 million and 350 million users in previous years. In late 2025, the fintech company already reported approaching 650 million milestone, as it pondered IPO plans in near future.
PhonePe leads India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) stats, with around 45–48 % market share by transaction volume, making it the dominant payments app in the country among strong competitors like Google Pay and Paytm. The financial service also offers its customers an ability to link pre-approved credit line to UPI apps.
Besides, the company has earlier partnered with OpenAI to embed AI-powered tools tailored to payment-use cases in its consumer and business apps, so that users can ask for help with travel planning, product recommendations, or comparison before making UPI payments.
