Amazon Introduces AgentCore Payments With Stablecoin Support From Coinbase And Stripe

Amazon Web Services announced a preview version of Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments on May 7. The feature allows AI agents built on the AgentCore platform to make payments for APIs, web content, MCP servers and other digital services during task execution.

According to the announcement, the payment system was developed with support from Coinbase and Stripe. The feature is intended for developers building AI agents that access paid services dynamically during execution. Its preview version currently supports the x402 protocol, which uses HTTP 402 “Payment Required” responses to trigger payments during API requests.

AWS said developers can connect an AI agent to either a Coinbase wallet or a Stripe Privy wallet. Users can fund wallets with stablecoins or fiat currency using debit cards. Spending limits can be set for each session.

The company explained that the system is designed to support micropayments for paid APIs, digital content and other online services.

“AgentCore payments represents a promising direction, enabling our teams to experiment with possible agent-driven experiences where premium content, like live sports and tentpole releases, could be surfaced and transacted on seamlessly in the moment of interest. We’re particularly interested in evaluating its potential to reduce engineering overhead, streamline payment orchestration, and introduce governed, traceable transactions as we look at potential next-generation commerce experiences.”

Mit Majithia, Executive Vice President, Warner Brothers Discovery Inc.

AWS stated that payments are processed inside the agent execution loop without manual intervention. At launch, AgentCore payments are available in preview in several AWS regions, including US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt) and Asia Pacific (Sydney). Some of the AWS client companies have already tested the new feature.

“Heurist is using AgentCore payments for our research agent which helps end customers to perform financial and crypto analysis and investment advice. End customers can set a budget for the research and the agent uses AgentCore payments to get accurate real-time data, commonly around markets, social sentiment, and news. We were able to integrate payments quickly to our agent with low effort and few lines of code.”

The announcement reflects broader industry activity around agentic commerce, stablecoins and programmable payments. Technology companies and payment providers test new infrastructure for AI agents that can complete transactions automatically. As the agentic payment landscape evolves, it becomes clear that blockchain rails are most suitable for the purposes of AI economy. Industry efforts around agentic commerce and machine-to-machine payments have recently focused on protocols such as x402, ACP, and MPP.

“There will soon be more AI agents transacting than humans, and they need money that’s built for the internet – programmable, always on, and global. By bringing Coinbase’s stablecoin infrastructure and x402 into AWS AgentCore, we’re giving developers the full stack to build agents that move money at software speed, with the trust and compliance enterprises expect.”

Brian Foster, Head of Infrastructure Growth and Strategy, Coinbase

Out of all blockchain tools, stablecoins remain the most popular for transaction settlement. Stablecoin transaction volumes reached approximately $76.6 trillion in the last 12 months, according to data published by Visa. Even the adjusted volumes that don’t count inorganic activity from bots and other artificially inflationary practices of over $13T are impressive. Stablecoin use cases increasingly include cross-border settlement, treasury operations, and machine-to-machine payments.

“Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI. For agents to become meaningful economic actors, they need a way to hold and spend money. That’s why we’re excited to partner with AWS to make stablecoin wallets for agents readily available to AgentCore developers.”

Henri Stern, CEO of Privy, a Stripe company

The U.S. regulatory environment for stablecoins is also evolving. In April 2025, the U.S. House Financial Services Committee advanced the STABLE Act, a bill proposing federal oversight rules for payment stablecoins and reserve requirements for issuers. This April, the regulators seem to approach consensus on the CLARITY Act that is supposed to split oversight of digital assets between the SEC and CFTC entities, clarifying which tokens are securities and which are commodities, and whether stablecoin issuers can offer rewards to these digital assets’ holders.
