A new push to redesign how money moves online is gaining momentum, as Coinbase and partners roll out the x402 Foundation with support of Linux Foundation — an initiative aimed at turning payments into a native function of the internet itself.

Announced in collaboration with Cloudflare and Linux, the foundation is designed to establish x402 as an open standard for “agentic commerce,” where AI systems rather than humans initiate and complete transactions. The timing reflects a broader industry shift: payments are being re-engineered for a world where software agents increasingly act as economic participants.

From logins and subscriptions to “pay-per-request”

At the heart of x402 is a simple but disruptive idea: embedding payments directly into web interactions using the long-unused HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. This allows applications, APIs, and AI agents to pay for services instantly, without accounts, cards, or billing cycles.

The model replaces subscriptions with real-time, pay-per-use pricing, unlocking new business models across data, content, and compute. Early use cases include paying for API calls, accessing premium datasets, or compensating creators on a per-interaction basis.

This is particularly relevant for AI systems, which need to execute high-frequency, low-value transactions autonomously: something traditional financial rails were never designed to handle.

The Linux Foundation’s recent involvement addresses one of the biggest barriers to this protocol adoption: trust.

By placing x402 under open governance:

  • Developers gain confidence in its longevity
  • The protocol can evolve as shared infrastructure rather than a closed ecosystem

This dramatically increases the likelihood that x402 could become a universal payment standard, rather than just another crypto-specific tool. This governance model mirrors the evolution of technologies like Linux and Kubernetes — projects that scaled globally because no single company controlled them.

Stripe, Base and the rise of machine payments

Momentum is already building. Stripe has launched early support for x402-powered payments, enabling developers to charge AI agents directly using USDC on Coinbase’s Base network.

This marks one of the first real-world deployments of “machine payments,” where AI agents can pay for services, such as data queries or software tools, without human intervention, on blockchain.

The implications are significant: instead of humans clicking “buy,” AI agents could soon negotiate, purchase, and settle transactions independently, forming what some analysts call a machine-to-machine economy. Blockhain acts as a transparent infrastructure layer boosting visibility into otherwise opaque machine-trigerred payments.

ERC-8004 and the trust layer for AI commerce

While x402 enables payments, another emerging standard, ERC-8004, addresses identity and trust. The protocol provides verifiable credentials for AI agents, helping ensure that autonomous systems interacting financially are authenticated and accountable. Early adoption is accelerating, with more than 24,000 agents registered since its launch in early 2026.

Together, x402 and ERC-8004 form a complementary stack: one handles value transfer, the other establishes trust, both essential for scaling AI-driven commerce.

Big Tech backs an open payments standard

The x402 Foundation is also notable for its institutional backing. The initiative is being positioned as a neutral, open standard under broader industry governance, with support from major players including Stripe and other global tech firms.

This mirrors the early development of internet protocols like HTTP itself, suggesting that payments could become just as seamless and invisible as data exchange.

Early traction is present but challenges remain

Despite growing interest, adoption is still in its early stages. Transaction volumes on x402 have shown volatility, with usage declining sharply after initial spikes, highlighting the gap between infrastructure and real-world demand.

There are also risks unique to autonomous systems. Malfunctioning or compromised AI agents could trigger unintended payments at scale, raising concerns around security and control.

A new financial layer for the internet

Still, the direction is clear. As stablecoin payments grow rapidly and AI agents become more capable, the need for native, programmable payment infrastructure is becoming urgent.

By combining open standards like x402 with identity frameworks such as ERC-8004, the industry is laying the groundwork for a fundamentally new economic model where software doesn’t just process information, but actively participates in markets.

If successful, the x402 Foundation could mark a turning point: transforming the internet from a network of information into a network of value exchange executed not just by people, but by machines themselves.
