Google has entered India’s credit card market with a UPI-linked digital offering, marking a significant step in its push into financial services.

Google Launches UPI-Powered Credit Card in India to Expand Digital Payments Ecosystem

Google has officially launched a new digital, UPI-enabled co-branded credit card in India, designed to integrate seamlessly with its Google Pay platform. The move strengthens the company’s presence in India’s rapidly growing fintech and digital payments market, offering consumers a more flexible and secure way to pay.

The card, issued in partnership with Axis Bank and built on the RuPay network, allows users to apply digitally and receive instant approval within the app. It also enables payments through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), giving cardholders the ability to transact in real time at online and offline merchants. Google highlighted that the service supports a range of local payment options and aims to make credit accessible to a broader audience.

Industry experts note that the integration of UPI with a credit product addresses common challenges faced by Indian consumers. Many travelers and first-time credit users often encounter friction when making payments, particularly when their preferred methods are unavailable. By embedding credit directly into the UPI ecosystem, Google reduces barriers for users and offers greater convenience while maintaining strong security and fraud prevention measures.

The launch expands an existing collaboration between Google and Axis Bank. The two companies previously partnered in 2020 to introduce the Axis ACE Credit Card, a co-branded card integrated with Google Pay that offered cashback rewards and digital convenience for cardholders. That initiative helped familiarize Indian consumers with mobile‑linked credit and digital payments.

Now, with the launch of the Flex by Google Pay UPI-powered credit card, the partnership takes a significant step further, embedding credit directly into the UPI ecosystem. This allows users to apply, receive approval, and transact entirely within the Google Pay app, while enjoying real-time UPI transactions, in-app management, and rewards, reflecting both companies’ ongoing commitment to expanding India’s digital payments landscape.

Google’s entry follows similar initiatives by other fintech players in India, including PhonePe and IDFC FIRST Bank, which have also introduced UPI-linked credit solutions. However, Google’s offering stands out for its deep integration with the widely used Google Pay app, allowing customers to manage, monitor, and use their credit line entirely within a single digital ecosystem.

According to company sources, this product represents Google’s first co-branded credit card initiative globally and highlights the company’s strategy to expand beyond payments into broader financial services, particularly in emerging markets with high digital adoption and growing demand for credit solutions.

With this launch, Google aims to provide a smoother, faster, and more secure payment experience for millions of Indian consumers while reinforcing its position in the digital finance landscape.
