Nexi Group launches Model Context Protocol (MCP) to power secure agentic commerce across Europe, enabling automated payments workflows for AI agents.

Nexi Group, the European PayTech, has unveiled its new Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardized framework designed to simplify how AI agents connect to payment infrastructure and commerce solutions. The tool is enabling developers, merchants and partners to integrate payment capabilities through conversational commands rather than complex coding processes.
By introducing MCP, Nexi aims to reduce integration barriers and lay the foundation for a secure, resilient and trusted infrastructure to support the emerging agentic commerce ecosystem across Europe.
The open-source MCP framework provides a standardized interface for AI systems to interact directly with Nexi’s payment gateways and services. Instead of building bespoke integrations, merchants can deploy MCP-ready gateways that allow AI agents to automate workflows while maintaining permissions, audit trails and oversight of every agent-initiated action.

Nexi describes the rollout as a three-step journey, moving from agentic servicing to full payment-enabled commerce experiences.
The first phase focuses on enabling agentic servicing through MCP-compatible payment gateways. This allows businesses to automate routine processes while ensuring compliance requirements, permission controls and transaction monitoring remain intact.
In the second phase, Nexi is collaborating with global partners including Google, Visa and Mastercard to enable agents to initiate payments while maintaining consumer control. Safeguards such as explicit consent, authentication layers and fraud-reduction trust signals are embedded into the process.

Nexi is already working with pilot merchants across the Nordics and Italy to deploy the infrastructure required for agent-driven shopping experiences. These pilots enable consumers to identify products, add items to carts and complete payments using domestic or international payment methods — all facilitated by AI agents operating within regulated payment frameworks.
The company continues to collaborate with partners and customers to address compliance considerations, advance innovation and help define how agent-led commerce will evolve in the European regulatory environment.
The launch of Nexi’s MCP follows a strategic partnership agreement with Google to support agent-initiated payments via the AP2 Agentic Commerce Protocol. This includes planned compatibility with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), designed to enable seamless checkout experiences across Google interfaces such as Search, Gemini and YouTube.
In January, Nexi also joined the Agentic Commerce Alliance (ACA), reinforcing its commitment to ensuring agent-driven commerce remains accessible, interoperable, and secure for merchants across Europe.
With the introduction of MCP, Nexi is positioning itself as a key infrastructure provider in Europe’s fast-evolving AI payments ecosystem, supporting a shift toward standardized, scalable, and compliant agentic commerce solutions.
